worth의 몇 가지 용법을 살펴보자면 특징할만한 것들이 몇 몇 있다.
이러한 것들을 조금 정리하자면 다음과 같다. (언제나 그렇지만 지금 당장 생각이 나지 않는 부분에 관해서는 추후에 계속하여 첨가하여 나갈 것이다.)
1. Be worth doing something : ~할 가치가 있다.
여기에서 worth의 품사는 preposition이며, 목적어로 명사 상당구(절)를 취해 ‘~할 가치가 있다’의 의미를 만든다.
- The movie is worth seeing.
- It's worth what you have paid for it.
- It's worth nothing. (아무런 가치도 없다.)
단, worthy로 쓰일 경우 뒤에 전치사 of를 데려온다. (전치사 of는 형용사와 함께 쓰이는 경우가 많다.)
2. Be worthy of something : ~(하기)에 족한.
특징적으로, worthy는 보통 서술적으로만 쓰이나(He's worthy of reward) 한정적으로 쓰이는 경우도 문어체에선 있다. (A worthy reward)
Q) It seemed to me, as I kept remembering all this, that those times and those summers had been infinitely precious and ( ) saving.
A) worth.
3. [A particular amount of money's] worth of something
- Ten pounds' worth etc of something.
ex) Six dollars' worth of potato chips.
이 경우 worth의 품사는 명사이며, worth가 주어 자리에 위치하였을 땐 of의 목적어 자리에 있는 명사가 단수냐, 명사냐에 따라서 동사를 단수형으로 취할지, 복수형으로 취할지 결정한다.
- Six dollars' worth of potato chips ‘are/were' ~
